I've been invited to submit my new video work for an exhibition in London at Riflemaker Gallery (don't worry, they don't make guns) for January '05. The theme of the entire exhibition is color. Of the works that I've created, the curator asked for my monochrome pieces. I thought it strange she'd want something non-color by me, for a show on color.
Many "artsy" people tend to wear black, or darker colors. I used to wear all colors of the rainbow, until maybe I myself sort of blacked-out. Before this transition, I once asked an artist why he wore black all the time. He smiled and said, "So I don't have to make a decision in the morning when I get dressed."
Black or white ... easy choices. No thought required. iPod white. iPod U2 black. In an age when you can easily make an object in any color or complex pattern to exact specifications, we know that monochrome is the new hip ... at least for a few more months.
