Milton Glaser's Less-More Equation

Gavin Bong from Malysia is another believer in simplicity. He writes to me, "There's too much clutter—masquerading as substance—when indeed, they are plain fillers." Gavin points to a related note from eponymous graphic designer Milton Glaser in a 2002 lecture Number 5: Less is not necessarily more. In most cases I must agree that we do tend to gravitate towards a tastier texture of blue versus a solid flat blue. Even the Suprematist Kasimir Malevich's Black Square leans towards the humane with the sublime texturing in black. Texture and other natural flaws or features of reality are the hallmark of our more than imperfect world. However there is something to be said for the perrrrfectly flat colored surface that is shiny, silky, and flawless. It's alien and inhumane. Exotic and wonderful in a superhuman way. Both less, and more, certainly have their own fascinating pleasures, more or less.
